Blog Post of the Week! By Budgets Are Sexy
It had to happen.
In this little tiny sphere of personal finance blogging, two bloggers would have to, sooner or later, hatch the same idea at the same time. I’m sure it’s going on right now at two keyboards miles apart from each other….we’ve seen a rash of real estate posts lately. Early this year I couldn’t stay away from exchange traded fund explanations and strategies. I’m sure we’ll soon see a bunch of life insurance posts.
Here’s my little tale: OG & I talked through this BRILLIANT idea to add some personal financial pictures to the Roundtable discussion of our podcast. You know what I mean: ask people for their personal info, we’ll change their name, and discuss how they’re doing on the show.
I thought it was an awesome, novel, one-of-a-kind idea.
So, I email the roundtable crew, and with a smug little grin on my face, mouse on over to check out what’s happening at Budgets Are Sexy.
Side comment: When two women wear the same dress to a party, they cringe. When guys wear the same tie, we high five each other. So that means I’ve gotta give J. Money a high five for his post An Inside Look at YOUR Finances. Great minds, dude. Great minds.
J., I don’t know if you’re familiar with our little award, but congratulations. This soon-to-be-esteemed prize is INCREDIBLY exclusive.
You may print this page and post it on your refrigerator.
8 Other Blogs You Should Be Reading But Might Have Forgotten So I’ll Remind You
OnTargetCoach hits an AverageJoe bullseye with 10 Reasons Why Personal Finances Are Like Settlers of Catan. Seriously, I’m pretty sure he wrote it just to show up on this list. Here’s a hint: if you want a link from me, put a board game in your post. On that note, if you’ve never played Settlers of Catan, what are you waiting for? They now sell it at Target. Grab a copy, invite some friends over, and play. I know the cover makes it look like the most boring game of all time….believe me, you won’t be disappointed.
Tony at Joyful Self Manager discusses Strategies For Making Productivity Your B.F.F. I’m not sure if I want productivity to be my Big Fat Flamingo, but it’s still a really good post.
Darwin’s Finance shares some of his Recent Investments of Late. If you’re a new investor looking to learn about trading and how to decide on investments, Darwin’s site is a good place to start. It’s always fun to look over someone’s shoulder who’s talking through good investment decisions.
My Money Design reviews one of the classics, Rich Dad Poor Dad. What a great book to turn everything you’ve ever thought on its head. This might be the only finance book Cheryl devoured. Good review and discussion in the comments on this classic book.
Dr. Dean at the Millionaire Nurse asks: Active Listening, Can You Improve? Huh? What was the question again? I think if you read Dr. Dean’s post and then read the Art of Manliness post: 12 Concentration Exercises from 1918, you might have a shot at becoming a better listener.
PT Money write a thorough landlord primer piece with Find a Tenant: Credit Check and Screening. Man, did I get lucky scoring a tenant whom I know. If you’re thinking about becoming a landlord, PT’s post on how to make sure you find someone credit worthy is a must-read. How does PT have time to write stuff this good and crank out daily information on FinCon? The guy must never sleep.
Finally, I’m crazy about planning (I think most people who visit this site are planners). That’s why I loved Erin’s post at The Dog Ate My Wallet about Intentional Planning. I feel her pain. Today I left my phone in the car and my son took it to his lifeguarding job. If you’re trying to call me today, I’ll find out about it around 9:30 tonight! If I would have planned just a little, I wouldn’t have had this problem.
We’re Very Popular and Humble, Too
Our little site was listed in FemmeFrugality’s Sunshine Awards. I’d love to do our own Sunshine Awards, but as FF also laments in her post, there are so many sites to mention that I’ve found inspirational…I started to cut and could only get it down to 23. Thanks to all the bloggers out there for being so inspirational to OG & me, and a huge thank-you for including us in your 10, FF!
I’m pretty sure that Emily at EvolvingPF was laughing as she mentioned our site AND the high cost of sliced fruit in her How to Cut Your Food Spending – Reducing Grocery Costs post. As always, it’s a well researched post at EvolvingPF, with tons of tips. If you’ve listened to our podcast, you’ll know that the price of sliced fruit is a running joke that both OG and Steve Stewart from MoneyPlanSOS have been pulling on me.
I’m off to Michigan again today (I know I just left…couldn’t stay away). But next Tuesday I’m finally home for good…for now. OG & I have some fun surprises planned, especially in Monday’s podcast. Have a good weekend!

Hey Joe,
Thank you for the kind mention. I’m still laughing over the Big Fat Flamingo, You’re a funny dude.

You mean BFF isn’t short for Big Fat Flamingo? … and I’ve been using it wrong all this time. Awkward.
Rock on, dude! Glad you enjoy the site and my brain can keep up with yours
Lucky for us there’s billions of people on earth, so we can both do the inside scoop of finances idea at the same time! Woohoo!
Have a great weekend, bro. Really really appreciate the kind words.
Ha! I think you got that “keeping up thing” switched around, J. It’s more like my slow train happened to be on a similar track to the J. Money express. Don’t forget to put the award on your refrigerator. Your family will be in awe all week.
Joe,
Funny enough, this has happened to us too. Holly and I had this brilliant idea about budgeting. We “created” a budget in which every penny of our monthly income was accounted for. It worked brilliantly! Thinking we may be able to share this new budget with the world, we went on to find that people across the globe were using zero-sum budgets. Oh well…
I’d actually like to see a picture with J’s new baby next to the award. I think that is the least a winner could do to thank you:)

I know! Great idea on the baby & award pick. J’s gotta step it up, dude.
I often read articles just published that are the same idea I have. The irony is I have a different slant and written weeks before, but no published. I try to stay 3-5 weeks ahead to take pressure off the writing.

That’s funny. If you happen to hear our podcast, you’ll see we did something different with this idea also. I like these real life case studies. They take all of this “what do you do if….” stuff we do on blogs and makes it real.
My master plan worked! Next week I’ll write about Candy Land and Money…ha ha! I seriously like Catan too! Many thanks to your minions for visting my site today.

Haha, wll that sucks. It’s cool, but it sucks.
You can still do it of course, but you just won’t be the first. Luckily for my blog, I write about the blue collar world and the peopel I interact with and the jobs I get… not much room for overlap unless another blogger is in my worktruck with me. That would be weird.

TB, if your partner in the truck starts writing stuff down, better hit “publish” fast!
Yo, thanks for the mention. I don’t understand the big deal about jMoney. All he does is make babies and drink beer.
On second thought, He’s da man!
Sounds good; and ‘great minds’ is OK with me. Enjoy your weekend, Joe.

Thanks for the mention. One of these days, I’ll figure out how to write a post connecting personal finance to Arkham Horror- I bet it would make a good getting out of debt comparison.
And then there’s personal finance and Dominion- but that just seems too easy.
shanendoah@The Dog Ate My Wallet recently posted..How a Having a Budget is Helping Me Succeed in other Goals
I’ve had that happen to me a couple of times, too…I’ll come up with an idea I think is original and then someone else posts about it the same day. It’s kind of fun when it happens, though, because both are truly original as neither one is a reaction to the other.
Thanks for the mention! 10 is too small of a number…

The nice thing about blogging is different people put different spins on the same idea that may resonate differently with their readers! I still think you should do it!
